How to Become An Esthetician In Utah
Becoming an esthetician can be a path to a fulfilling career. Estheticians are often in demand and can work in a variety of settings, including salons, spas, and even cruise ships.
However, becoming an esthetician in Utah means following certain steps to get your license. Like most states, Utah requires estheticians meet certain professional requirements.
Here are the steps to become an esthetician and set foot on a rewarding path.
Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements
In Utah, you have to be at least 17 years old to be licensed as an esthetician. Most schools require you to be 16 or 17 to start training. However, unlike many states, Utah has no general educational requirements; you do not have to have your high school diploma or a minimum grade of education. However, Renaissance Academie requires that you have a high school diploma, GED, transcript showing secondary school completion, or a state certification of home school completion. You also have to be a citizen or legal resident.
You also have to not have been convicted of certain crimes. If you have a criminal history, you should verify your eligibility for licensing before starting your course.
Step 2: Enroll in a State-Approved Esthetics Program
The next step is to choose your training program. Make sure the program you pick is approved and accredited. Look for a school that is a member of the American Association of Cosmetology Schools.
Renaissance Academie is a fully accredited beauty school with passionate instructors, a comprehensive curriculum and learning environment. We are accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS).
Step 3: Complete the Required Training Hours
The State of Utah requires that estheticians complete 600 hours of training. Our basic esthetician course meets the requirements, and full time students can complete the course in as little as 17.5 weeks. We also offer a master esthetics program, which totals 1200 hours and allows you to meet the requirements to be a master esthetician.
The basic training covers the state-required curriculum, which includes treatments that include hair removal, makeup, lash extensions, etc. Our courses also include salon and spa business. We have multiple program starts and flexible scheduling options. You will work in our salon under the supervision of licensed professionals, building your skills and learning how to deliver services to real clients in our well-equipped facility.
The master esthetician program teaches techniques such as aromatherapy, Ayurveda theory, and European facials. Our master estheticians often go on to careers in medical spas and assisting dermatologists.
Once you complete the required hours, you will receive a certificate that you can use to apply to become a licensed esthetician or master esthetician.
Step 4: Pass the Licensing Exams
After your course, you will need to pass the required licensing exams. Exams are administered by Prov, and you will need to do theory and practical exams at one of Prov’s testing centers. You will need to pay a fee and will receive unofficial results right away, but your official results will take 2 to 3 business days.
Written exams are administered by computer at one of the testing centers. You will then do a practical exam in which you will “treat” two clients requiring different procedures, using mannequins. You will be required to use your own supplies. and equipment.
If you fail the exam, you can retake it, but will need to pay the fees again. The written exam cannot be taken remotely.
Step 5: Apply For Your License
You must apply for your license in a timely manner. You can apply online, or print off a PDF application and fill it out and mail it in or drop it off. The application form must be signed and attested by a representative of your school to certify that you have completed your training program.
You will need to pay the required fee, which is not refundable. You will also need to submit your examination scores and official documentation from your school.
Once you get your license, it will be good for two years. At that point you will need to send in a renewal form and pay a renewal fee. You are also required to do continuing education. At Renaissance, we follow up with all of our students and give them the tools they need to stay in good standing.
Step 6: Start Your Career as an Esthetician
While we can’t guarantee you a job when you graduate from our esthetician program, Renaissance Academie includes training in salon and spa management and we give support and advice for your job hunt.
Most estheticians work in salons and spas, although you can also pursue a career as an educator, state board inspector, or go freelance. You might choose to specialize in a particular area, such as working with people who are getting married.
Networking with alumni can help you find a good job and discover salon openings that are perfect for you. If you choose to take the master esthetician course, you might also work in a medical spa or with medical professionals. Don’t forget unusual possibilities, such as working at a spa resort.
